Mathieu (Adrien Jolivet) is the son of bookstore owner Camille (Catherine Deneuve). The day Mathieu and his best friend Franck (Thomas Dumerchez) attend their classmate’s bachelor party, their car crashes into a tree. Mathieu dies in the car crash, while his best friend survives.
Camille, unable to get over the loss of her son, begins to cling to every element of Mathieu’s life - his last school papers, his clothes, and even his best friend, irrespective of the fact that Franck was responsible for Mathieu’s death. Camille’s relationship with Franck meets the disapproval of her ex-husband (Guy Marchand) and her pregnant daughter (Élodie Bouchez), who cannot forgive Franck.
Camille becomes obsessed with the boy’s studies and finances, eventually hiring him to work at her bookshop. Franck, initially apprehensive about Camille’s attentions, begins to respond, only to later realize that Camille could be dangerous.
Directed by screenwriter, actor and director Gaël Morel, After Him screened at the 2007 Festival de Cannes.
