Synopsis
A young American-born Palestinian woman, Soraya (Suheir Hammad) returns to the country from which her family was exiled in 1948. On arriving in Ramallah, Soraya tries to recover the money left in an account by her grandparents but meets with refusal from the bank. She meets Emad (Saleh Bakri), a young Palestinian whose ambition, unlike hers, is to leave the country for good. To escape the constraints in Palestine, and earn their freedom, Soraya and Emad take things into their own hands, even if this means breaking the law.
Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir takes the viewer deep into the history, culture and politics of her country. Salt Of This Sea gives an inner view of a situation that one knows intuitively. Jacir’s film goes below the surface of reality by putting together many little visible and invisible elements, subtly nuanced and woven into the narrative.
The film screened as part of Un Certain Regard at the 2008 Festival de Cannes.
