Synopsis
Acclaimed French director Éric Rohmer once again explores the notion of love and fidelity in his epic romantic drama, The Romance Of Astrea And Celadon.
Rohmer sets his tale against the backdrop of the Forez plains in the ancient land of Gaul. It is a bucolic world where in shepherds and shepherdesses wear flowing white dresses and engrave love paens on trees. Peace reigns in the land. One such happy shepherdess, Astrea, is in love with Celadon. Celadon too returns her love. All is well in the world till one day, Astrea witnesses Celadon flirting with another girl. In fact, Astrea and Celadon had hatched a plan for the flirtation to fool their quarreling parents, who oppose their union. Yet, blinded by jealousy, Astrea falls for her own lie. Distraught, she refuses believe Celadon, who protests his innocence. She tells Celadon never to show his face again to her. Celadon declares he will not live without her love and jumps into the river to drown himself.
Celadon is saved by a nymph Galathée who does not want to let Celadon return to his home. Instead, she takes him to her fairy tale castle where she keeps him in luxury, but imprisoned. Meanwhile Astrea, believing Celadon to be dead, is heartbroken over their fight. She now realises that Celadon was indeed innocent, and weeps copious tears.
Celadon manages to escape from the castle with the help of one of the nymphs, Leonide. With the help of Leonide and her uncle, the druid priest Adamas, he hides in the forest. Adamas and Leonide hatch a plan for Celadon to disguise himself as a girl, and win Astrea’s confidence again. They reason that by going in disguise, he is not violating Astrea’s order. Celadon agrees and dons lipstick and braids his hair.
Adamas introduces Celadon as his daughter to Astrea. The two become friends, and Celadon thus manages to spend time with his true love. Finally, the time comes when Astrea learns the truth. The couple reunites to live happily ever after in Rohmer’s touching fable on the power of love. The Romance Of Astrea And Celadon was nominated for the Golden Lion at the 2007 Venice International Film Festival.
