Synopsis
Director Khuat Akhmetov’s first feature Wind Man is based on Gabriel Garcia-Márquez’s 1955 short story, A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings.
A tiny rural village in the Kazakh steppe witnesses a severe thunderstorm. On one of the farms Almat, the young son of a shepherd, falls ill. The boy’s parents are on the verge of giving up hope when an old man falls down from the sky. He has two wings, which had apparently broken in the fierce storm. Seeing him, Almat begins to recover.
The villagers are suspicious of this strange mute creature. The local priest is sure he is Satan’s agent. The village scholar, however, insists he is an angel. The possibility also arises that he is a human mutant, a product of nuclear testing.  As the days progress, Almat forges a strong friendship with the “Wind Man”.  The old man wants to return to the sky but his broken wings make it impossible for him to do so. Meanwhile, the villagers live in terror of a veiled prowler on the outskirts of town who kills anyone who sees him.
To resolve the debate about the Wind Man, the villagers call Khokhim, the most important person in the village, to give his opinion. Khokhim arrives with his men and proceeds to raid the entire village. He leaves with his truckload of loot the next morning. When the Wind Man dies saving Almat’s life, the young boy dreams of growing wings one day and joining his friend in the sky. A moving poetic parable, Wind Man earned a special mention at the 2007 Montreal World Film Festival in the First Feature Film category.
