The first feature film to combine an engaging character-driven story with dramatic action and the stunning art of Chinese Zen drumming, The Drummer is a gorgeous feast of sight and sound.
Sid (Chan), a rebellious young drummer, is having a secret affair with the girlfriend of a powerful underworld kingpin, Ma (Tsang). When their relationship is discovered, Sid is cocky and insults Ma further. His father Kwan (Tony Leung Ka Fai), a Triad group leader himself, sends Sid away from Hong Kong to hide in Taiwan, far away from the ruthless reach of Ma, who demands the boy''s detached hands as recompense for his behaviour.
Bored without his regular urban haunts, Sid roams around the mountain valley and encounters a group of Zen drummers whose thrilling art, rigorous physical training and ascetic way of life intrigues him. Sid wants to join the group, but must first undergo challenges before being accepted as a trainee. He slowly realises that being a drummer requires a lot more than simply hitting the drum with a stick. Sid undergoes tai chi and martial arts training, carries heavy stones on his back, and submits himself to rigorous long marches and “undignified” labour to prove his worthiness. Despite his hard work, the group’s members have serious doubts about his eligibility. Gradually, the spoilt brat matures into a dedicated and energetic member of the group.
Sid’s independence from the Triad life is profoundly challenged, however, when a twist of fate awaits him back home in Hong Kong and forces him to choose between loyalty to his family and his new found faith in himself …
This original and stylistic film was nominated as the Outstanding Taiwanese Film for 2007 at the Taipei Golden Horse Awards and screened in the World Cinema–Dramatic section at the Sundance Film Awards in 2008.
