Synopsis
Alan Resnais’ Same Old Song, a musical comedy about six Parisians looking for love, pays tribute to British writer Dennis Potter and his use of songs to convey the emotions of his characters.
Odile is searching for a new apartment in Paris. She takes the help of real estate agent Marc Duveyrier. Odile’s younger sister Camille is writing her doctoral thesis and works part-time as a tour guide. One of the regulars on her tours is Simon. Simon is secretly in love with Camille, and lies about being a history aficionado who works at a radio station. In reality, Simon works for Marc. At that point of time, he does not know that the middle-aged Marc is infatuated with Camille and that the two are seeing each other.
Odile lives with her husband Claude. Unaware that Claude is on the verge of leaving her for another woman, Odile learns that her ex-boyfriend Nicolas is back in Paris after eight years. The now married Nicolas is also looking for an apartment. He has difficulty in settling on one as his marital problems make him unsure of bringing his family to the city. Nicolas renews his contact with Odile much to Claude’s chagrin. Nicolas’ wife Jane comes to meet him. Upset that he has not yet found a house, they argue and Jane leaves the city.
Marc finds a lovely apartment for Odile and Claude, with a breathtaking view of Paris. Simon is heartbroken when he learns of Camille and Marc’s relationship. Odile is ecstatic about the apartment and holds a housewarming party. During the party, Simon becomes good friends with Nicolas and discloses the truth about the apartment that Marc had hidden from Odile: the view will soon be blocked by another high-rise building. Nicolas immediately informs Odile, who is devastated and Claude comforts her. When Camille comes to know of Marc’s deception, she breaks up with him. Nicolas calls Jane and tries to mend things with her.
Same Old Song (1997) was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 1998 Berlin International Film Festival, and won seven awards at the 1998 César Awards, including Best Film.
