Synopsis
Writer-director Corneliu Porumboiu’s makes his feature film debut with a stinging commentary of the revolution that took place in Romania.

On 22nd December, 1989 at 12:08pm. Romania saw the fall of its dictatorship when a revolution in Bucharest prompted Nicolae Ceauşescu to flee. Television host Jderescu plans to mark the sixteenth anniversary of the revolution with a panel discussion on the events of that day. When his original high-profile guests change their minds about appearing on the show, Jderescu is forced to replace them with two ordinary citizens who insist that they played significant roles in the revolution.

After a couple of days’ preparation, Jderescu’s guests Piscoci and Manescu arrive in the studio. Piscoci is known in the neighbourhood for playing Santa Claus at Christmas. Manescu is a professor suffering from a terrible hangover during the telecast. Both explain the events of the day from their point of view.  Halfway through the show Jderescu invites viewers to call in and participate in the discussion. Things go haywire when the caller perspectives on the turn of events on that fateful day differ wildly from that of the two guests. It is now up to Jderescu to salvage the show.
12:08 East Of Bucharest(2006) was widely acclaimed at its North American premiere at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival. It won the Camera d’Or at the 2006 Festival de Cannes and the Best Romanian Film Award at the 2006 Transilvania International Film Festival.
