Synopsis
Bob is a lonely film critic past his prime. Passionate about cinema, he travels to film festivals, is writing his own script and spends most of his evenings at the local theatre. Solitary and awkward, Bob harbours a secret crush on the girl who sells tickets at the theatre, and every evening his heart breaks as she rides away with her boyfriend on his bike after the theatre closes. One day, Bob witnesses the couple’s break-up and seizes the opportunity to woo the girl. Thrilled at the chance of spending time alone with her, Bob invites her to his apartment where they are interrupted by the doorbell...
The new arrival is a Russian stranger Duska, whom Bob had ostensibly met in his travels. Duska says Bob had given him a business card and invited him to stay at his home – and here he is! Much to Bob’s discomfort, Duska not only spends the night but many days at Bob’s apartment, and in fact, turns his life upside down. Ousted from his peaceful solitary existence, Bob tries everything to get the rambunctious Duska to leave, and finally, one day, he does.
But with the chaotic Duska no longer underfoot, Bob realises how lonely his life actually was. Craving Duska’s company, he travels to Russia in search of his friend, but can find no trace of him. Did Duska ever exist or was he a figment of Bob’s imagination? A sweet fantasy drama about loneliness and friendship, Duska was the official Dutch entry to the 2008 Oscars.
