Biography Claude Lelouch is a French film director, writer, cinematographer, actor and producer.Always an aspiring filmmaker,he won a prize at the Cannes Amateur Film Festival when he was 13 for his film Le Mal Du Siècle, but only established himself as a serious filmmaker much later. Lelouch’s insistence on realism and attention to detail has led to his arrest during the filming of C'était Un Rendez-vous, 1976 (It Was A Meeting) for illegally driving a Ferrari at 140 km/h as part of the film. Lelouch later countered that he had driven his own Mercedes for the scene and dubbed the sound effects of a Ferrari.) The multiple award-winning director, writer, cinematographer, actor, producer is also the founder of the production company ‘Les Films 13’. His illustrious career spans over 40 years and as many films. He is probably best remembered for his first international hit,Un Homme Et Un Femme(A Man and a Woman) the hugely popular tale of Anouk Aimée, a widow, and her widower counterpart, race car driver Jean-Louis Trintignant. The film swept numerous international awards, including the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Story,Writing and Screenplay and the Palme d’Or at the Festival de Cannes.Lelouch’s success is partly due to his ability to create films that resonate with universal human experiences. His understanding of emotions and relationships in films like Un Homme Et Une Femme, Edith Et Marcel and Robert Et Robert places him in an elite club of filmmakers. Tellingly,Lelouch also made films that enjoyed commercial success, including Night Woman and To Be A Crook. Though his career has seen its share of ups and downs, his 1995 adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables proved that he was capable of delivering quality cinema. In 2002, Lelouch was one of the 11 filmmakers from across the world to work on an international collaboration that presented different perspectives of the September 11th attack on the World Trade Centre in New York.
