Tulpan wins the Best Film at IFFI
Lumière Movies ‘ Tulpan’ won the Golden Peacock for the Best Film along with a Silver Peacock for Most Promising Director to Sergey Dvortsevoy for Tulpan.

This is the second time that Lumière Movies films have won prestigious awards at major international film festivals in India. Earlier this year, its films won several awards at the OSIAN Film Festival including The Best Director award for ‘ Three Monkeys’- directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, the FIPRESCI (Best Film) Award for the Annemarie Jacir directed ‘Salt of the Sea’ and Nada Abou Farhat winning the Best Actress award for her amazing portrayal of ‘Ziena’ in Philippe Aracntingi directed ‘Under the Bombs’.
The citation received by Tulpan for the Best Film clearly explains why it was a worthy winner- “‘Tulpan is a cinematic triumph. It uses hand‐ held long takes to pull us into this very unique world where man co‐ exists with nature. The images dance beautifully between poetry

and realism: that is something only cinema can achieve “
Praise for Sergey Dvortsevoy, its director was also lavish- “Tulpan is an epitome of any film maker’s courage, persistence and originality. In his

debut feature, Mr. Sergey Dvortsevoy’s direction is meticulous in all aspects. And his empathy
for the characters will overwhelm audiences everywhere.”
Tulpan revolves around Asa, who after finishing his naval service travels back to the Kazakh steppe where his sister and her shepherd husband live a nomadic life. To start his new life, eager Asa must get married first before he can become a shepherd himself. Asa’s only hope for marriage on the deserted steppe is Tulpan, the daughter of another shepherd family. Poor Asa is disappointed to learn that Tulpan doesn’t like him because she thinks that “his ears are too big”. Asa doesn’t give up and continues to dream of a life that may not be possible on the steppe.

It’s a timeless and endearing coming-of-age tale set in a rarely seen part of the world, the Asian steppes. Four years in the making, the film screened at Un Certain Regard at the 2008 Festival de Cannes and at the 2008 New York Film Festival.

Lumière Movies plans to theatrically release Tulpan across the country in 2009 , thus bringing quality contemporary cinema to cine-lovers in India soon after its international release.
